After just two games of this cycle of UEFA European Championship qualifiers (ECQ), the prospect of a first-ever major tournament already appears a forlorn one for both Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. Neither side has found the net yet, although Luxembourg did at least avoid defeat in a 0-0 draw with Slovakia, only to be brought back down to earth courtesy of a 6-0 hammering at the hands of 2016 winners Portugal.
Perhaps avoiding finishing bottom of the group is the best Luxembourg can hope for, especially as they’ve not won more than one ECQ match in a qualifying campaign this century. Breaking their duck here means winning this H2H for the first time ever (D1, L3), but the Red Lions have lost four straight ECQ games on home soil while conceding 13 goals, so confidence is unlikely to be sky-high despite being hot favourites.
Liechtenstein endured the worst start of any side to this ECQ cycle, with a 4-0 defeat to Portugal followed up by a 7-0 drubbing against Iceland during interim manager Rene Pauritsch’s two games in charge. That extended their losing streak to a soul-crushing 15 matches, while they managed to score in only one of those games. With form like that, avoiding the wooden spoon in Group J would be an achievement for new boss Konrad Fünfstück, especially as the principality have only finished off the bottom of an ECQ group table once in their history (during Euro 2016 qualifying).
A glimmer of hope can be found in that their last victory actually came in Luxembourg in October 2020, but it’s been all doom and gloom away from home since then, with Liechtenstein winless in their subsequent 14 such matches (D2, L12). They’re also without a victory in 27 internationals overall (D3, L24), so the Blue-Reds are bound to be pessimistic about ending that run as they go in search of just a sixth-ever ECQ win.
Players to watch: Luxembourg attacker Danel Sinani has nine international goals to his name, with the side winning six times (D1, L0) when the Norwich City man has got on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Liechtenstein captain Nicolas Hasler is the microstate’s highest active goalscorer (five), with his last two strikes coming in the team’s previous two wins against San Marino and Luxembourg back in 2020.
