Burnley vs Tottenham prediction: ENGLAND: Premier League betting tips on match 2023-09-01 14:00.
Burnley endured yet another chastening afternoon on Sunday, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Aston Villa, prompting boss Vincent Kompany to admit his side must “learn from their mistakes”. There’ve been plenty of them lately for Burnley, who are conceding goals for fun in the league, leaking three in each of their two games so far, and things are unlikely to let up with Tottenham next in town.
Spurs’ visit rounds of a trio of home games to open Burnley’s Premier League (PL) campaign, and it would be a great disappointment to come out of the other side without a single point. It’s hard to make a convincing argument for Burnley to get off the mark here, but they can perhaps draw inspiration from the fact they have avoided defeat in three of their last four PL H2Hs at Turf Moor (W2, D1, L1).
While Burnley struggle at the foot of the table, Spurs are riding high at the business end, with seven points from a possible nine to open their campaign. New boss Ange Postecoglou has rejuvenated Tottenham, and after his tongue-in-cheek claim after their 2-0 win against Bournemouth at the weekend that he is “just copying Pep Guardiola”, replicating Manchester City’s 3-0 win here at Turf Moor earlier in the season perhaps isn’t out of the question!
Despite being knocked out of the EFL Cup on Tuesday at Fulham, belief should build even more that they can replicate City’s win when considering Spurs have scored 2+ goals in each of their three PL games to open a campaign for only the third time ever. Encouragingly, Spurs finished fourth in each of those two prior seasons (2009/10 and 2018/19), but ironically, they were beaten at Turf Moor in both of those campaigns, going down 4-2 in 2010, and 2-1 in 2019!
Players to watch: Burnley’s Lyle Foster opened his PL account against Villa, and his two Clarets’ goals to date have both been the third of the game and scored at Turf Moor. While Foster likes home comforts, Tottenham’s James Maddison likes travelling, clocking up a whopping 18 goal involvements (G9, A9) across his last 20 PL away appearances.
Hot stat: Spurs have failed to score in only one of their last 15 PL away games.
