Sheffield Wed Ipswich prediction 2023-09-16

Sheffield Wed vs Ipswich prediction: ENGLAND: Championship betting tips on match 2023-09-15 14:00.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Xisco Muñoz will be hoping that his players have got a disastrous start to the Championship season out of their system over the international break. On their return to the second tier, the Owls sit 23rd with just one point from their first five games, their worst start to a league campaign since 2007/08 when they lost their first six encounters en route to a 16th placed finish in the Championship.

Coincidentally, that awful streak 16 years ago began with a 4-1 defeat at upcoming opponents Ipswich. Despite that unfortunate result for Wednesday however, they have enjoyed facing the Tractor Boys in recent times, going unbeaten in their last six H2Hs (W3, D3), a run which included a pair of 2-2 draws in League One last term.

In contrast to Wednesday’s miserable start under Muñoz, Ipswich are loving life under Kieran McKenna and currently sit second after a four-year Championship hiatus. After five rounds, the Suffolk side have only been outscored in the division in 2023/24 by East Anglian rivals Norwich, with a win at Hillsborough giving Ipswich the opportunity to move top should Preston slip up at home to Plymouth.

Despite failing to claim three points in this fixture in the last few years, Ipswich can take confidence from the fact that they have lost just three times in their last 15 visits to the blue half of Sheffield (W6, D6). That said, since taking the reins at Portman Road in December 2021, McKenna’s record against Yorkshire clubs hasn’t been brilliant, winning only three of nine such matches in all competitions (D3, L3).

Players to watch: Josh Windass set up both goals for Wednesday at Ipswich last season and also turned provider for Barry Bannan’s equaliser at Cardiff last month. Meanwhile, Nathan Broadhead has four goal involvements from his five Championship outings in 2023/24 (G3, A1), while he also scored against the Owls in February.

Hot stat: Across the last 17 H2Hs, 14 have seen both teams score.
