Borussia Mönchengladbach finally recorded their first win of the Bundesliga season (W1, D2, L3) last round with a 3-1 result at VfL Bochum. The victory was soured by trouble from Gladbach’s travelling supporters that prompted a ten minute delay to kickoff, owing to their fans refusing to take down some banners that blocked security gates. After they eventually relented and entered into a silent boycott in protest, they quietly got to see their team actually take full points for the first time this Bundesliga season after scoring the opening goal (W1, D1, L1).
Despite this, Gladbach have recorded their worst six-game start since 2015/16, which was only the fourth occasion this century they have had five or fewer points after six games – a fate they even avoided when relegated in 2006/07! It’s one of the worst possible times to come across an opponent they haven’t beaten in their last five Bundesliga meetings, whilst there’s no home ground advantage to speak of with all three of their losses this league campaign coming on home soil.
FSV Mainz may have claimed recent H2H bragging rights, but nevertheless their season has been nothing short of disastrous (D1, L5). It was not so long ago that the bottom-rock team started their campaign even worse, as they had zero points after six games in 2020/2021, but the gulf in class is still quite alarming, highlighted by four of their five league defeats being accompanied by multiple goal margins.
The visitors have already conceded ten goals in three away trips (L3) and have now endured a drought of more than six months without a league win on the road (D2, L5). Despite this precarious situation, Mainz's club management is maintaining a publicly calm presence, led by director of sport Christian Heidel who categorised speculation about Bo Svensson’s future as “completely unnecessary … the whole club feels that we are ready, now we need the results and we will get them”.
Players to watch: Alassane Pléa scored two first-half goals last weekend for Gladbach and has previously delivered a brace at home to Mainz. The visitors could benefit from another goal from Jae-Sung Lee, having collected 16 of a possible 21 points since 2022/23 when he scores.
