It was an incredible performance from La Liga’s (LL) biggest surprise package Girona at the weekend as they came from 2-0 down to blow Almería away with a 5-2 win. That saw them draw level with table-topping Real Madrid on points, and with El Clásico taking place this weekend, this is a serious opportunity for the club who were in the second tier just two seasons ago to end the round above the rest.

It probably goes without saying that this is Girona’s strongest ever start to a top-flight season (W8, D1, L1), a record which has not come easy for the club with a joint league-high ten points being won from losing positions. Two of those three comeback wins achieved this term came across their last three home games, and with eight goals conceded during that time (W2, L1), their attackers may have to pick up the slack once again.

Facing one of the bluntest strike forces in the division could be a bonus for Girona, as Celta Vigo arrive here positioned in the relegation zone having scored just one goal per league game on average (W1, D3, L6). In stark contrast to their hosts, this is Celta’s worst start to a top-flight campaign since the introduction of three points for a win in 1995 and it has even led to speculation that Rafa Benitez’s job could already be under threat.

Another damning contrast with Girona’s incredible ability to come from behind is Celta’s apparent inability to hold onto a lead. The visitors have led four times in league action this season, but have gone on to win just once when doing so (W1, D1, L2). That includes each of their two most recent away games, where they threw away a 2-0 and a 1-0 lead to lose in both outings.

Players to watch: No fewer than 11 different goalscorers have contributed to Girona’s 24 league goals, yet it was Artem Dovbyk who contributed over one-fifth of that total (G5), including two goals in their latest comeback victory. Celta’s Jonathan Bamba could be a candidate to outdo him after notching his first goal contributions for the club across his last three league appearances, albeit with neither coming in victories.

Hot streak: Girona won each of their last six LL games when starting as the pre-match favourites.
