Time is running out for winless Sevilla to book their place in the knockout stages of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League (UCL) after failing to record a victory across their first four Group B matches (D2, L2). Whilst they’ll need the results of all remaining matches to go their way, they can potentially still earn enough points as well as a vital head-to-head advantage over group rivals PSV Eindhoven and Lens with back-to-back victories.
If not, they risk repeating some unwanted history as the Spaniards themselves are the last side to be eliminated at the group stages of a UCL the year after winning the UEFA Europa League (UEL) title, doing so in 2015/16 with a third-place finish. PSV are showing signs of returning to their brilliant best this campaign, certainly at least on Dutch soil. Not only did they become the first visiting side to win an Eredivisie game at FC Twente (3-0) since May 2022 at the weekend, but they’ve also recorded the league’s third instance of opening a new season with 13 straight wins – leaving them just four short of the league record they set under Guus Hiddink back in 1987/88.
Their progression to the UCL knockouts for the first time since 2015/16 would be secured with a win here if Lens lose away to Arsenal, but away victories in this competition have been hard to come by. Since the beginning of 2008/09, PSV have failed to win a single UCL group stage game away from home (D4, L10), whilst they’re also without a clean sheet in ten consecutive away trips in all UEFA competitions, so the goalscoring unit will likely need to be productive to break the drought in this clash.
Players to watch: Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri has now scored in eight competitive appearances this season after his weekend goal, including in the reverse H2H. PSV goalscoring machine Luuk de Jong was also on the scoresheet that evening, whilst seven of his 17 goals this season were recorded in the UCL.
