Granada played out a third successive stalemate last time out, although the result had a much more negative feel to it. After decent draws with top-half opponents Las Palmas (1-1 home) and Barcelona (3-3 away), the hosts had to come from behind to rescue a point against last-placed AlmerĂa. As a result, they finished the round 19th in the table and six points from safety.
The draw with AlmerĂa also continued another unwanted trend for Granada who have conceded first in 21 of their 25 La Liga matches this season. Valencia’s only goal in the reverse H2H (W 1-0) came from the penalty spot, and goals have been similarly difficult to come by recently. They were kept scoreless in three of their last four league games, including at home to lowly Sevilla (D 0-0) which came following what was a solid period of four consecutive La Liga wins surrounding their Copa del Rey exit to Celta Vigo.
That Sevilla contest didn’t mark a happy first anniversary for Valencia head coach Rubén Baraja, who said afterwards that the team had done everything to win except find the net. Losing 2-0 to both Las Palmas and Atlético Madrid in their two most recent La Liga away trips doesn’t make for good reading, but they should be inspired by taking points home from each league visit to a side ranked in the bottom eight at the start of this round (W3, D2).
Players to watch: Myrto Uzuni’s equaliser against AlmerĂa was the fourth time this La Liga season he opened Granada’s account. On a similar note, it was Hugo Duro who scored Valencia’s first goal in each of their last three league victories.
