After making the worst possible start to their Bundesliga campaign, it doesn’t get any easier for Bochum (L2), who now welcome reigning champions Bayern Munich to the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. Letting a 2-0 lead slip against Hoffenheim (L 3-2) was particularly galling but at least there was some good news this week as they signed forward Lys Mousset on a free transfer.
With several players unavailable due to injury, manager Thomas Reis has a job on his hands to repeat last season’s 4-2 H2H win here as Bochum have never won back-to-back meetings with Bayern and they’d previously gone 14 matches without beating them (D2, L12). With just one home league win in five games (D1, L3), they could be heading for a repeat of the start of 2006/07, which they began with three straight league defeats – one of them at home to Bayern!
As expected, Bayern are among the early Bundesliga pacesetters with two wins from two after seeing off Wolfsburg last weekend (W 2-0). Sadio Mané has settled in quickly, which means the loss of Serge Gnabry due to injury might not be too keenly felt, and they seem to have adapted quickly to life without striker Robert Lewandowski, who scored twice here last term.
Bayern’s away record is hugely impressive and a 6-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday one suggests they’ll be good travellers once again this term. In fact not since May 2019 has Julian Nagelsmann’s side failed to score in a league away fixture (W36, D7, L9) so the Bochum defence can expect to be busy.
Players to watch: Quick off the mark, Simon Zoller has scored three competitive goals for Bochum this term, all of them before the 20th minute. Similarly, Jamal Musiala has netted four times for Bayern this season, three times inside the first 35 minutes.
