Eric Roy hailed the dawn of a new era at Brest after beating Avranches 2-0 in the Coupe de France on Saturday. The new boss said their success in his first game in charge was “the opportunity for us to start a new run,” but his attention must now quickly turn to picking up just a fourth victory of the Ligue 1 season, a wretched start which leaves Brest currently occupying one of the four relegation spots.
The Pirates' perilous position certainly isn’t helped by losing their last two league matches since their return from an extended break, though that is perhaps a little bit of a false representation given both defeats came against European chasing sides. That hasn’t appeased all the supporters though, some of whom booed Lille off after their 1-1 draw against Reims in their last league game, leading the manager to play the dangerous game of insisting he was “very disappointed” with the fans.
Players to watch: Steve Mounié netted a late penalty as Brest won this fixture 2-0 last season, and he is now unbeaten in his last four appearances against Lille (W2, D2). He will likely be trying to outscore Jonathan David, who has lost on his two previous visits to Stade Francis-Le Blé, but has a staggering record of 52 wins from his 62 career goalscoring club appearances (D7, L3).
