Brest vs Lorient prediction: FRANCE: Ligue 1 betting tips on match 2023-12-19 20:00.
A 2-0 victory at Nantes in round 16 saw Brest maintain fifth position in Ligue 1, moving level on points with fourth-placed Lille and closing the gap to only two points to Monaco in third. Wednesday’s fixture against Lorient marks the halfway stage of the campaign before the winter break and the Pirates come into this match on 28 points, their highest-ever total at this stage of a Ligue 1 season.
After an excellent start to 2023/24 which saw Eric Roy’s side triumph in four of their opening six outings (D1, L1), they then endured a five-game winless run throughout October and into November (D2, L3), but have since refound their form with four victories out of five (D1), conceding only two goals in the process. However, in order to extend their unbeaten streak, Brest will need to end a sequence of three successive league defeats against Lorient.
The visitors may struggle to make it four in a row as they travel up the north-west coast still looking for their first away win of the season (D3, L4), although that record on the road would have been worse had it not been for a 91st-minute equaliser at Toulouse in their last such outing. Successive home losses to Marseille and Strasbourg followed, meaning Lorient arrive at Stade Francis-Le Blé with only Clermont below them in the table.
With no victory in their last seven (D2, L5) and only two all campaign (D6, L8), Régis Le Bris’ men have a tough job on his hands to maintain their Ligue 1 status, something they regained most recently for 2020/21. And if Lorient are to start improving their fortunes, they will need to work on their defence, which is comfortably the worst in the league (GA31) and has led to them conceding ten times in their last four matches (D1, L3).
Players to watch: Jérémy Le Douaron drew a blank at Nantes on Sunday, but the Brest forward had netted in the previous two games, opening the scoring in both. Bamba Dieng missed almost two months of the season through injury, but is now back in the Lorient side and has goals in two of his last three appearances!
Hot stat: Brest have opened the scoring in each of their last five matches.
