Chile vs Peru prediction: SOUTH AMERICA: World Championship – Qualification betting tips on match 2023-10-12 00:00.
With just two rounds played, it’s still early days in this CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) cycle, but neither Chile or Peru have made the start they’d have hoped for and will come into this contest desperate for their first victory after both claiming just one point so far. It’ll be the hosts who will have to overcome a psychological disadvantage to do so, having won only one of the last four H2Hs between these two sides (L3).
The fact that one success did come in the last home contest between the two should serve as a confidence boost, with Chile running out 2-0 winners back in November 2020. Clean sheets have also been a theme of their recent encounters on home turf, with three in as many home matches, a streak which has contributed to an unbeaten four-game run on Chilean soil (W3, D1).
With things arguably starting to look up for the hosts, a first World Cup appearance since 2014 remains an achievable goal. Peru haven’t had to wait quite as long for a World Cup adventure with their last finals appearance coming in 2018, but they’ll still be out to end that exile this time around. Ranked 22nd, they sit 14 places higher than Chile in FIFA’s rankings, so they should be seeing this as an ideal chance to get their first three points on the board.
Things haven’t been going well for Peru since the arrival of manager Juan Reynoso in August 2022, as after winning three of their opening four games under his guidance, they have succeeded in just one of the six matches since (D2, L3). That now leaves them at risk of going 4+ games without a win for the first time since going on a winless run of eight back in June 2021
Key battle: Chile’s Gary Medel (156) and Peru’s Yoshimar Yotún (123) have accumulated a combined 279 international caps between them. The two captains also share an identical H2H record (W4, L4), and with them both in the twilight of their careers, this could be the final chance for one of them to get ahead in the overall battle.
Hot stat: Just two of Chile’s last seven games and one of Peru’s last eight saw both teams score!
