If the rest of Haiti’s CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign is anything like as entertaining as their 2-1 comeback win over Qatar on Sunday, then fans of the Soldiers are in for a treat. It would be somewhat fitting for the island nation to go on a fairytale run at this tournament, 50 years on from the only time that they have lifted the trophy to date (when it was known as the CONCACAF Championship).
Haiti’s success in 1973 on home soil was no fluke though, as they finished runners-up in 1971 and 1977, while, since the turn of the millennium, the Caribbeans have reached the quarter-finals three times (2002, 2009 and 2015) and the semi-finals once (2019). Whether Haiti can replicate those runs into the latter stages of the competition remains to be seen, but as they arrive on the back of an impressive six-match winning run, you certainly wouldn’t rule it out.
Mexico, winners of the CONCACAF Championship and Gold Cup a record 11 times in total, were seemingly in disarray following the sacking of Diego Cocca earlier this month in the aftermath of the 3-0 CONCACAF Nations League semi-final defeat to the United States. However, the Tricolor thrashed Honduras 4-0 in interim boss Jaime Lozano’s first game in charge, with left winger Luis Romo scoring twice, including the opener less than a minute in.
Losers just once across their last nine games (W5, D3), Lozano’s men are some bookies’ favourites to claim glory this summer, and will no doubt be highly confident about facing Haiti. Mexico have only tasted defeat once in this H2H fixture (W8, D3), with the latest triumph being a 1-0 semi-final win in the 2019 Gold Cup.
Players to watch: Frantzdy Pierrot is Haiti’s fourth-highest scorer of all time (18 goals) and has scored in each of his last five international matches, netting six of his eight goals in that period before half-time. By contrast, Mexico’s OrbelĂn Pineda has scored six of his last eight goals for club and country after the break, with the latest being his side’s third against Honduras.
