Iceland vs Liechtenstein prediction: EUROPE: Euro – Qualification betting tips on match 2023-10-15 18:45.
Quarter-finalists in 2016, Iceland’s chances of reaching the next UEFA European Championships were dealt a blow by a 1-1 draw in Luxembourg on Friday. That result left Åge Hareide’s side trailing the qualification places by six points with just three rounds to go, and with two of those fixtures coming against the top two sides in Portugal and Slovakia, their prospects certainly seem bleak.
Only upcoming visitors Liechtenstein sit below Iceland in the group, and Hareide’s men will certainly look to take advantage given their excellent H2H record (W7, D2, L1), including a 7-0 victory in Vaduz in March’s reverse fixture. Another victory on Monday would be their fifth H2H win in succession, and having scored 19 and conceded just once across the previous four meetings, confidence ought to be high.
The same can hardly be said of Liechtenstein, who after going down 2-0 in front of their home fans to Bosnia & Herzegovina on Friday, saw their losing streak in European Championship qualifiers extend to a whopping ten matches, while they’re winless overall in 23 (D3, L20). That said, after conceding 14 goals from their opening three matches in Group J, they have at least become a slightly tougher opponent having been beaten by a three-goal margin only once from their last five games in the group.
Although they arrive at Laugardalsvöllur looking to avoid their third straight 4-0 defeat at the venue, two of their previous five away H2Hs did at least end in 1-1 draws. And with Liechtenstein’s final two Group J games against top of the table Portugal and third placed Luxembourg, this match may represent their best chance of picking up something and avoiding their first ever pointless European Qualifying campaign.
Players to watch: Iceland midfielder Arnor Sigurdsson grabbed an assist on Friday evening and he has been in fine form for Blackburn in the Championship with four goals, including two against QPR prior to the international break. Sandro Wolfinger could be Liechtenstein’s only goalscoring hope as he netted their solitary goal of this campaign in the away defeat to Bosnia & Herzegovina last month.
Hot stat: All nine of the goals scored in Liechtenstein’s last four matches have arrived before half-time.
