Konrad Fünfstück’s Liechtenstein prop up Group J having lost all six of their European Championship Qualifiers so far in this campaign, conceding an eye-watering 19 goals. That perhaps comes as no surprise given their dismal overall record in the competition having only ever won five of 74 Euro qualification fixtures to date.
The Blue-Reds have never progressed from a group in seven attempts, with their best outcome a second-bottom finish to Moldova in their attempt to reach Euro 2016. That record will only extend to zero successes from eight efforts come the end of November when the final group fixtures are played out, with Fünfstück’s men unable to catch the top two even if they won all four of their remaining games.
Liechtenstein’s attempt to snap a run of 31 international matches without success (D3, L28) appears doomed, with a Bosnia & Herzegovina side 136 places above them in the FIFA rankings up next. They too have never reached a Euro’s before, though have come mightily close to doing so, missing out in the play-offs for each of the last three instalments, including on penalties to Northern Ireland for the delayed 2020 edition.
Savo Milošević’s side are guaranteed a play-off spot again this time around with their UEFA Nations League ranking, and may well need to utilise it given their shaky start to Group J, losing four of their first six (W2), including a damaging defeat at home to hopefuls Luxembourg. A distinct lack of goals has hampered them, failing to find the back of the net in all four of those defeats having stuck three past Iceland in the opening group game.
Players to watch: Defender Sandro Wolfinger is the only player to have found the back of the net this campaign for Liechtenstein, and it came against Bosnia last month in a 2-1 loss! All three of his international goals to date have come in defeats. Without the injured Rade Krunic, veteran Edin Džeko remains Bosnia’s biggest threat. He scored in that September meeting, and has eight goals against Liechtenstein, the most he has against any nation.
