In spite of a winless start to their maiden Premier League (PL) campaign, Luton boss Rob Edwards believes he has seen “progression” in his side’s performances. The Hatters chief insisted his side “fought diligently” in their latest defeat as they went down 1-0 to Fulham last weekend, but Edwards will be acutely aware that heart alone won’t be enough to keep Luton in the top-flight as they return to Kenilworth Road to face Wolves.
It was widely anticipated that home form would be Luton’s saving grace this season, but they were abruptly reminded of the stark realities of the PL when losing 2-1 to West Ham in their only prior home league outing this term. There’s little by way of historical omens to help Luton here, as this is the first league meeting between these sides since 2007, but there was one other meeting in between – a 1-0 FA Cup win back in January 2013 – when Luton were in the Conference and Wolves were in the Championship!
The fortunes of both sides have changed drastically since, with Luton’s fairytale rise seeing them reach the top-flight, while Wolves famously made it into the Europa League. Competing in Europe seems no more than a distant memory now, with Wolves having lost four of their opening five PL games (W1), but perhaps there’s solace to be sought in the fact that came away from home against an Everton side who sit alongside Luton in the bottom three.
That’s one of just two PL away wins for Wolves in 2023 (D3, L9), and with that 1-0 win at Goodison Park the only clean sheet they amassed in that time, it’s clear to see where their biggest issue lies. Those issues again reared their ugly head in Wolves’ latest outing, a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool after which boss Gary O’Neil lambasted the “crazy goals” Wolves conceded.
Players to watch: Luton’s Mads Andersen is the scorer of their only PL goal at Kenilworth Road this season, and given his last eight club goals have been headers, he’s a real presence in the air. Perhaps a more robust defender, Wolves’ Nélson Semedo is one of eight PL players ahead of the round to have made ten or more fouls, earning him three yellow cards.
