The theme of solid, yet uninspiring, performances continued for Mainz last weekend as they failed to hold onto their 1-0 lead in an eventual 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim. That did at least extend their unbeaten run to four league games (W1, D3), yet the six points earned there account for three-quarters of Mainz’s measly seasonal total (eight) and as such, they occupy the relegation play-off position heading into this round.

Even so, Christian Streich’s visitors head here on the back of a stunning 5-0 win over Greek giants Olympiacos on Thursday evening, a result which secured back-to-back UEFA Europa League group progressions for the Black Forest club.
Translating that continental success into Bundesliga points is the next challenge as Freiburg enter this clash on the back of a five-game winless run in domestic action (D2, L3), their longest such streak since 2020. Playing away isn’t likely to soothe any nerves either, with Freiburg currently without a win in five away league games (D1, L4), failing to score in three whilst conceding 13 times in the process.
Players to watch: Mainz midfielder Marco Richter scored the opener last weekend and could make another impact here after assisting three goals across his last five home H2Hs against Freiburg. Although he is yet to net in league action this season, Freiburg’s Michael Gregoritsch may well be ready to get off the mark here after hitting his first career hat-trick in the first-half of their midweek European win.
