Rotherham United claimed their first Championship away win of the season on Tuesday night, beating Stoke City 1-0 despite being dominated for large parts of the contest. The Millers have certainly settled well under new manager Matt Taylor, who admitted that against Stoke they “weren’t perfect but the result is what matters”, and after losing only one of their last four league games (W2, D1), his side are starting to make a case for a play-off push.
Taylor won his first Yorkshire derby as boss, a 2-1 victory against Huddersfield Town, and his second sees Rotherham host Hull City, a team they haven’t beaten in four H2Hs (D1, L3) including two consecutive 3-2 defeats at home. However, as the Millers have only lost one of their last nine home league fixtures (W4, D4), fans will hope they’ll be the ones celebrating if this turns out to be another goal fest.
Like their hosts, Hull secured their first league away win of the season in midweek, beating Blackpool 3-1 to improve their position in the lower reaches of the table. Still seeking a permanent replacement for Shota Arveladze, interim boss Andy Dawson described the win for his injury-ravaged squad as a “complete performance” after the Tigers moved three points clear of the 22nd-placed side.
A battle for survival still looms but they’ll now look to build on that away win as they’d lost their four previous Championship road games whilst conceding an average of 3.25 goals per fixture. A decent record here should help them travel with some confidence, although they failed to score in two of their last three Yorkshire derbies in the league as the away side (W1, D1, L1).
Players to watch: Georgie Kelly netted after the 60th minute in two of Rotherham’s last four home league fixtures, while Hull’s Regan Slater scored against Blackpool after collecting his third yellow card in as many league appearances.
