Sheffield Wed vs Rotherham prediction: ENGLAND: Championship betting tips on match 2023-10-28 13:00.
Following a 3-0 thumping at Plymouth in midweek, their tenth league defeat of the season already, Sheffield Wednesday remain firmly on track to record the Championship’s lowest-ever points tally. Notably, Sunday’s opponents in a South Yorkshire derby are Rotherham, the club who currently hold that unwanted record for the second tier’s lowest-ever points pick-up!
It’s perhaps unsurprising to see the Owls struggling given they haven’t scored in six games, with a change in management from Xisco Muñoz to the largely unknown Danny Röhl offering little by way of encouragement so far. The German has been beaten in both of his games at the helm, admittedly both away from home, leaving Wednesday with just three points to their name after 13 games, all of which were earned with draws.
Rotherham picked up just 23 points in the 2016/17 campaign, unsurprisingly finishing bottom, though by the time they’d played 13 games that season, they had double the number of points that Wednesday have at present! Skip forward seven years, and albeit not to the same extent, the Millers are firmly in the relegation dogfight also having had a poor start (W2, D3, L7).
Matt Taylor’s side saw their recent home clash with Ipswich postponed due to flooding in the area, and after others around them picked up points, it was vital that they started to pick up points sooner rather than later to keep in touch. They did just that in midweek, beating Coventry 2-0 on home soil, meaning the Millers are now unbeaten in two league games for the first time this season, with a huge shot at going three unbeaten for the first time since April if they can build on an impressive recent record in away H2Hs (W7, D2, L1).
Players to watch: Rotherham have conceded five set-piece goals already this term, so giant Owls striker Michael Smith could well come back to haunt his former club. Jordan Hugill netted a brace against Wednesday in 2019 for QPR and will fancy his chances of building on his equaliser in Rotherham’s last away game.
Hot stat: Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham are the only two Championship clubs not to have scored a goal before the 15th minute this season.
