Southampton Chelsea prediction 2022-08-30

Southampton vs Chelsea prediction: ENGLAND: Premier League betting tips on match 2022-08-29 18:45.
Southampton boss Ralph HasenhĂŒttl felt his side “deserved more” from their 1-0 Premier League (PL) defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, though he’ll have been pleased with the warm reception the fans gave the team afterwards. After a slow start to the campaign (W1, D1, L2), HasenhĂŒttl will be under no illusions that results are needed to keep the Saints faithful onside and lift Southampton up the table.

In what is almost the 100th anniversary of this H2H fixture, Chelsea are the next visitors to Saint Mary's, but the Saints haven’t won a home H2H since March 2013 (D2, L7) and conceded six without reply here last term. That defeat forms part of just one home PL win in eight attempts (D1, L6) although such a drubbing is something of an anomaly as the other five defeats were via one-goal margins, indicating Southampton should put up more of a fight here.

Chelsea were almost the architects of their own downfall against Leicester City (W 2-1), after having a player sent off in back-to-back PL games for the first time since October 2014. The Blues showed great character to win, ticking several boxes in the process, as Chelsea bounced back from their 3-0 defeat against Leeds United thanks to Raheem Sterling’s first goals for the club.

Manager Thomas Tuchel watched on from a hospitality suite after his red card against Tottenham Hotspur and conceded Chelsea were lucky not to concede a late equaliser. With each of Chelsea’s last four league away games won or lost ‘to nil’ (W2, L2), a second clean sheet of the season could prove priceless here, and Tuchel will hope to have completed the signing of Wesley Fofana in time to bolster that back line.

Players to watch: Three of ChĂ© Adams’ last four goals for Southampton came after half-time, as did two previous strikes against Chelsea. Meanwhile, Kai Havertz will have happy memories of Saint Mary’s, netting Chelsea’s fourth goal in last season’s 6-0 rout – one of three consecutive club goals arriving before half-time.

Hot stat: Four of Southampton’s last five PL fixtures were goalless at half-time.
