Swansea Sheffield Wed prediction 2023-09-23

Swansea vs Sheffield Wed prediction: ENGLAND: Championship betting tips on match 2023-09-22 14:00.
Seven games in and Swansea remain winless in the Championship this season (D3, L4) after conceding in the 92nd minute on Tuesday night to draw 1-1 at QPR. Josh Ginnelly’s 7th minute opener was just the third time this season in league action that the Swans had gone ahead, although that’s not necessarily a blessing as they alarmingly went on to lose both times prior.

Boss Michael Duff will take little consolation from the fact they avoided defeat in the capital, but he will at least be pleased his side managed to stop the rot having lost all of their previous four, including the South Wales derby last weekend. He’ll also take hope from their recent record against Championship new boys Sheffield Wednesday, with the Swans losing just one of their 12 clashes against the Owls in all competitions since the turn of the millennium (W5, D6).

The last time Wednesday won away against Swansea was in the opening month of the 1983/84 season, a campaign which ended up with the Welsh club relegated from the Second Division and the South Yorkshire outfit promoted as runners-up. Sadly for all of an Owls persuasion, gaining promotion this season will seemingly take a minor miracle as they head across the border this weekend winless in their first seven since promotion back to the second tier (D2, L5).

They have at least got two points on the table thanks to draws against Leeds, and most recently Middlesbrough in midweek, but new boss Xisco Muñoz hasn’t been taken well by the Wednesday faithful, having to apologise to them in an interview already for the drab football that’s been served up. He’s no stranger to the managerial merry-go-round having spent time in charge of Watford, and another poor result this weekend would heap more pressure on him.

Players to watch: Swansea may look to summer signing Jerry Yates for inspiration, especially if they fall behind, as his last three Championship goals made the score 1-1. Wednesday will again look to captain Barry Bannan – no player across the whole of the EFL created more chances last season, and he grabbed the assist for Wednesday’s goal at Swansea in a 1-1 draw back in 2020.

Hot stat: No team has won this fixture by more than a two-goal margin since 1984.
