Wigan Rotherham prediction 2023-05-08

Wigan vs Rotherham prediction: ENGLAND: Championship betting tips on match 2023-05-07 14:00.
As another exhilarating Championship season comes to a close, there’s very little to play for on the final day for either Wigan or Rotherham, with both side’s futures sealed on the penultimate weekend of the campaign. The Latics’ relegation was confirmed after conceding a heart-wrenching 93rd minute equaliser against Reading, but boss Shaun Maloney had nothing but praise for his squad on a “deeply painful day”.

Wigan’s league form under Maloney has been relatively solid, losing just six of their 17 matches under his stewardship (W4, D7). They’ve been particularly impressive at the DW Stadium, avoiding defeat in six of their last seven outings on home soil (W3, D3), a record which should instil confidence of avoiding defeat on the final day for the sixth time in the last seven seasons (W3, D2, L1).

They’ll face a Rotherham side playing with extra freedom after a 1-0 victory over play-off bound Middlesbrough secured their Championship safety. Boss Matty Taylor said his players and the supporters should be “so, so proud” at avoiding an immediate return to the third-tier, a fate that befell them on each of their previous two stints in the Championship.

Perhaps with the pressure off, the Millers can end a torrid 12-match winless run on the road that had threatened to send them crashing back to League One (D6, L6). Troubles on their travels would’ve put Rotherham in deep trouble but for Reading’s points deduction, with their 12 goals scored in away matches the worst return in the division, meaning even a trip to the Championship’s basement boys looks a difficult assignment.

Players to watch: Wigan frontman Will Keane has netted three times in eight career appearances against Rotherham, each time opening the scoring. Opposite number Jordan Hugill also enjoys this fixture, netting four times in five unbeaten meetings with the Latics (W3, D2), scoring the game’s last goal in all three wins.

Hot stat: Wigan have led at half-time in just one of their 22 Championship home matches, no side in the division has done so on fewer occasions.
