Wolfsburg would undoubtedly have had aspirations to build upon last season’s 12th place finish, especially after bringing in revered former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovač over the summer. However, Wolfsburg collected just one win from their opening seven league matches (D2, L4) and headed into the international break second from bottom, representing their worst start in Germany’s top tier for ten years!
Kovač pulled no punches in his assessment following his side’s latest 2-0 defeat away to Union Berlin, stating “We’re just not ready to show the basics that you need in football, the passion, the camaraderie, the mentality, the sacrifice. It’s been an equally uninspiring start to the season for Stuttgart who only find themselves above Wolfsburg by virtue of goal difference. One major difference though is Stuttgart are still yet to pick up their first win of the campaign, giving Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side a piece of unwanted history as this is now their longest-ever opening Bundesliga run without a victory (D5, L2).
Three of the four score draws in that run came after conceding the opening goal, positively suggesting there is some fighting spirit in Matarazzo’s men. Converting that into three points is key though, especially away from home as Stuttgart haven’t tasted an away day league win since December 2021 (D8, L5), albeit that victory did come at this very venue (2-0).
Players to watch: Wolfsburg’s Lukas Nmecha certainly enjoys home comforts, registering all three of his Bundesliga goals in home matches. Opponent Chris Führich is in good form with two goals across his last three Stuttgart matches. He also rescued a point for his side late on in the last H2H.
